The Soviet Moon Rover becomes the first remote-controlled robot to travel on the moon's surface
Janis Joplin was a singer/songwriter from Texas. Her biggest hits were “Piece of My Heart” and “Me and Bobby McGee”. Her body was discovered at a hotel in Los Angeles where she’d been staying for 2 months. She died of a heroin overdose, probably mixed with alcohol.
Apollo 13 was the 7th manned mission to land on the moon. The lunar landing had to be aborted after an oxygen tank exploded. They had to overcome many obstacles, but managed to return safely to earth on April 17. They even made a movie about it in 1995, starring Tom Hanks.
Arnold Schwarzenegger played the role of Hercules in Hercules in New York. He was credited under the name "Arnold Strong," but his accent in the film was so thick that his lines were dubbed after production.
January 3 – Jon Pertwee makes his first appearance as the Third Doctor in the Doctor Who serial Spearhead from Space. It also marks the first time that the series was broadcast in colour.
Norwegian truck driver Hjalmar Andersen won three out of four speed skating events to become the most decorated athlete at the Games. Dick Button of the United States performed the first triple jump in international competition to claim his second consecutive men's figure skating Olympic title.
Boston Bruins = first time in finals since 1958; St. Louis Blues = 3rd straight finals for the Blues. Bruins won the series 4-0, their first Stanley Cup victory in 29 years. Bobby Orr scored the winning goal; image of him flying through the air (tripped by Blues defenseman) is one of the most famous and recognized hockey images of all time.
