November 11: After 28 years, Berlin Wall is open to West. Following Massive protests against the Berlin Wall bringing about the collapse of The Berlin Wall and the East German Government both are dismantled which leads after many years to the reunification of East and West Germany.
Tens of thousands of Chinese students take over Beijing's Tiananmen Square in rally for democracy. Troops with automatic rifles and tanks killed at least several hundred demonstrators trying to block the military's advance towards Tiananmen Square. One of the most iconic pictures is of a demonstrator blocking the path of a tank enjvoy.
In Alaska's Prince William Sound the Exxon Valdez spills 240,000 barrels (11 million gallons) of oil after running aground. The oil spill turned into a huge ecological disaster and thousands of wildlife were harmed or died as a result. Over 1,000 miles of coastline was damaged by the spill and 25 years later some areas and wildlife are still being negatively impacted.
July 31: Nintendo releases the Game Boy handheld gaming system in North America. The Game Boy was the first 8-bit handheld system that used different cartridges that could be
interchanged to play different games.
United Airlines Flight 811, a Boeing 747 bound to New Zealand from Honolulu, Hawaii, rips open during flight, sucking 9 passengers and crew out of the plane. The flight experienced a cargo door failure in flight shortly after leaving Honolulu. The resulting explosive decompression blew out several rows of seats. The aircraft returned to Honolulu, where it landed safely.
April 15: this disaster was a human crush at Hillsborough football stadium in Sheffield, England, during a soccer game. The resulting 96 fatalities and 766 injuries makes this the worst disaster in British sporting history. The crush occurred in the two standing-only central pens, after an exit gate was opened to ease overcrowding outside the entrance turnstiles.

GPS revolutionized navigation, both at sea and on land, by providing position reports with unprecedented, pinpoint accuracy. Each satellite was placed in a specific orbit at a specific altitude to ensure that four or five satellites are always within range from any point on the planet.
The Central Park jogger case was a major news story that involved the assault of Trisha Meili, a female jogger, and attacks on others in Manhattan's Central Park on the night of April 19. The attack on the jogger left her in a coma for 12 days. As her identity remains secret for years, she becomes known as the “Central Park Jogger.” The attacks were "one of the most widely publicized crimes of the 1980s".
In Beverly Hills, California, Lyle and Erik Menendez shoot their wealthy parents to death in the family’s den. In the months after the murders, the brothers spent money lavishly, adding to investigators' suspicions that they were involved with their parents' deaths. The brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
American boy band from Massachusets, New Kids On The Block (NKOTB) made it big this year. The group was slowly gaining national attention, but they hit pay dirt with their single, "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)", which reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in June. The group had been scheduled to open for fellow teen-pop act Tiffany but their sudden popularity caused a reversal, and she wound up opening for them (although the two acts were technically billed as "co-headliners").
