Waco Siege

Waco siege, a 51-day standoff between Branch Davidians and federal agents that ended on April 19, 1993, when the religious group’s compound near Waco, Texas, was destroyed in a fire. Nearly 80 people were killed.

European Union

The Maastricht Treaty signed on February 7th takes effect, formally establishing the European Union, with 12 nations: Great Britain, France, Germany, the Irish Republic, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Denmark, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Austria, Finland, and Sweden became members of the EU in 1995.

Monica Seles stabbed

Australian Bushfires

Years of severe drought and extreme weather combined to create the deadliest bushfire in Australian history, until the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. There were 75 fatalities, and it destroyed the world's second largest national park Royal National Park.

UK Boys convicted of murdering toddler

In the United Kingdom, 11-year-olds Robert Thompson and Jon Venables are convicted of the child murder of 2-year-old James Bulger of Liverpool. They boys lured James away from his mother at a mall. They dragged him across town where they smashed his skull with bricks and stones. 

WTC Bombing

Feb 26: a truck bomb detonated below the World Trade Center's North Tower. The bomb was intended to send the North Tower crashing into the South Tower, bringing both towers down and killing tens of thousands of people. It failed to do so but killed six people and injured over a thousand.

Beanie Babies launched

Beanie Babies were created by Ty Warner. They were unique because they are stuffed with plastic pellets ("beans") rather than conventional soft stuffing, giving Beanie Babies a more flexible feel. During the later half of the 1990s, the toy emerged as a major fad, and were collected not only as toys but also as a financial investment due to the high resale value of some Beanie Babies.

Canadian Federal Politics

Brian Mulroney announces his plan to resign as Prime Minister, and Kim Campbell becomes the first female prime minister. In the Federal election, Jean Chrétien's Liberals win a majority, defeating Kim Campbell's PCs, which are reduced to two seats. Campbell loses her own seat. The Bloc Québécois form the official opposition.
