Y2K Scare

The world awaited the consequences of the Y2K bug (when the date switched from 99 to 00, to computers it would be 1900, not 2000).  The problem was that older computers still being used for critical functions might break down. Governments spent billions of dollars around the world fixing original source code in older computers, upgrading systems and backing up data. 

Nunavut

Nunavut becomes the newest, largest and northernmost territory of Canada. It is the first major change to Canada's political map since the incorporation of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1949.

FIFA's Women's World Cup

The third edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup was held in the United States and won by the host team. The final between the U.S. and China was the most-attended women's sports event in history with an official attendance of 90,185. The final was scoreless after extra time and won by the U.S. in a penalty shootout. An official music video of the number Let's Get Loud by Jennifer Lopez was filmed live at the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup.

SpongeBob Premieres

The popular children’s cartoon show “SpongeBob SquarePants” premieres on the Nickelodeon cable network on May 1st. The show was created by animator Stephen Hillenburg who had previously been a marine biology teacher. The title character was voiced by comedian Tom Kenny who also provided voices for “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “CatDog,” “The Powerpuff Girls,” and “Adventure Time.” SpongeBob SquarePants was one of the highest rated and longest running shows on Nickelodeon with over 200 episodes. 

Columbine High School Massacre

April 20: Two teenage boys went on a shooting spree at Columbine High School in Colorado. Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, dressed in trench coats, began shooting fellow students outside school, then moved into the library, killing 13 and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide.

School Shooting in Alberta

April 28 - Taber, Alberta, a 15-year-old boy, who was withdrawn from public school to escape bullying, walked into W.R. Myers High School and shot two students with a .22 rifle, killing one (Jason Lang) and injuring the other.

Venezuela mudslides

Torrential rains caused catastrophic floods and mudslides in the coastal regions of Venezuela, killing an estimated 25,000 people and leaving 100,000 others homeless.
