Concorde Air France Flight 4590 crashes just after takeoff from Paris killing all 109 aboard and 5 on the ground.

Summer Olympics in Sydney

Sept 16-Oct 1: it was the second time the Summer Olympics were held in Australia. Triathalon and taekwondo were new additions to the program. Women also took part in weightlifting and the modern pentathlon for the very first time. Birgit Fischer earned two gold medals in kayaking to become the first woman in any sport to win medals 20 years apart. 

Tiger Woods wins Grand Slam

With his victory at the 129th British Open in July 2000, he became the youngest golfer (24 years old) to complete a career Grand Slam—that is win all four major tournaments at least once during a career.

Closest US Presidential Election in Decades

In the U.S. presidential election, 2000 Republican challenger George W. Bush defeats Democrat Vice President Al Gore, but the final outcome is not known for over a month because of disputed votes in Florida. It came down to 537 votes that decided the race.

LA Lakers win a title

L.A. had its first professional champions since 1988 – thanks to Shaq, Kobe, Phil and the rest of the Lakers. The Lakers won thanks to Shaquille O’Neal, their mountain of a center, who was named Most Valuable Player during the 1999-2000 season. They also won thanks to Kobe Bryant, their highlight-film-every-night guard, who skipped college and went straight to the Lakers’ starting lineup when he joined the league before the 1996-97 season.

USS Cole bombing

Slipping through security in a small boat, terrorists carry out a suicide explosives attack on the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Cole in Yemen, killing 17 sailors. The Cole was en route to the Persian Gulf to enforce a U.N. trade embargo against Iraq.

Feb 13: The final original Peanuts comic strip is published, following the death of its creator, Charles M. Schulz.

Playstation 2

March 4 – The PlayStation 2 is released in Japan. Several months later, it becomes the best-selling game console of all time. Even with the release of its successor, the PlayStation 2 remained popular well into the seventh generation. Sony finally announced that the PlayStation 2 had been discontinued after 13 years of production – one of the longest runs for a video game console. 

European Soccer

July 2 – France defeats Italy 2-1 after extra time in the final of the European Championships (which is held every 4 years), becoming the first team to win the World Cup and European Championships consecutively.
