October 14 – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) taser a Polish man, Robert Dziekański, who died shortly thereafter, at the Vancouver Airport. The incident is videotaped and eventually released to the public.
October 19 – In Surrey, British Columbia, six people are murdered in a highrise apartment. Chris Mohan, and Ed Schellenburg, were innocent victims in the murder. The other four were drug dealers.
Barbara Morgan, a former teacher from Idaho, is part of a mission aboard the space shuttle Endeavour to the International Space Station, where additional trusses will be added and supplies delivered. Morgan was the backup to Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who died in 1986 when the shuttle Challenger disintegrated shortly after takeoff (Aug. 8)
April 16: Seung-Hui Cho, a seniorat Virginia Tech, shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others in two separate attacks (another six people were injured escaping from classroom windows), approximately two hours apart, before committing suicide.
Feb 8: age 39, prescription drug overdose. Anna Nicole Smith, was an American model, actress and television personality. Smith modeled for Playboy and Guess. Her highly publicized marriage to J. Howard Marshall resulted in speculation that she married the 89-year-old mainly for his money, which she denied. Following Marshall's death, Smith began a lengthy legal battle over a share of his estate. During the final six months of her life, Smith was the focus of renewed press coverage surrounding the paternity and custody battle over her newborn daughter, Dannielynn.
June 24: Canadian professional wrestler, known as the Canadian Crippler, killed his wife and 7-year-old son in their home in Fayetteville, Georgia, before taking his own life by hanging himself. Benoit held 22 championships between WWF/WWE, WCW, NJPW, and ECW. He was a two-time world champion, having been a one-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, and a one-time World Heavyweight Champion in WWE. Research suggests depression and brain damage from numerous concussions are likely contributing factors leading to the crime.
The one-time pop princess hit a rough patch in late 2006 and early 2007, as she dealt with her divorce from Kevin Federline and subsequent custody battle. It was clear the star needed a break when on February 16, 2007 she headed to a salon and buzzed her famous locks off herself as paparazzi frantically snapped away outside. While it took two more years for things to settle down (somewhat) for Spears, she's regained much of her music mojo: Her 2008 album, "Circus", went platinum.
