Property prices continue to fall on both sides of the Atlantic in Europe and America causing hardship to many homeowners, and problems for the financial institutions. Many financial institutions report major losses caused by the sub prime mortgage problems. President Bush signs the $700 billion bailout / Rescue package bill is signed into law.

North Illinois University shooting

The Northern Illinois University shooting was a school shooting that took place on February 14, 2008, at Northern Illinois University DeKalb, Illinois. Steven Kazmierczak opened fire with a shotgun and three pistols in a crowd of students on campus, killing five students and injuring an additional 17 people, before fatally shooting himself.

Fidel Castro steps down

Feb. 19: Cuban president Fidel Castro, who temporarily handed power to his brother Raúl in July 2006 when he fell ill, permanently steps down after 49 years in power.

Obama becomes President

Nov. 4: Democratic senator Barack Obama wins the presidential election against Sen. John McCain, taking 338 electoral votes to McCain's 161. Obama becomes the first African American to be elected president of the United States. 

Bathurst Tragedy

January 12 - A road accident near Bathurst, New Brunswick leaves eight people dead, including seven teenagers and one woman. They were all members of the Bathurst High School basketball team.

Paul Newmann dies

September 26 - Paul Newman, actor,race car driver, philanthropist (starred in 50 films best known for Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid) died at age 83.

Heath Ledger dies

January 22: age 28; accidental prescription drug overdose. Australian actor first big role was in "10 Things I Hate About You"; he went on to star in "Brokeback Mountain". His most famous role was as the Joker in the Batman movie "The Dark Knight". 

Michael Crichton dies

American author, screenwriter and film director died at age 66. He wrote "Jurassic Park" (1990) and "Westworld" (1978).
