April 29 – An estimated two billion people watch the wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey in London.
Citizens in countries across the Middle East rise up against their governments in what was called the Arab Spring. Countries affected include Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Libya, Yemen and more. Many believe that social media was responsible for how widespread the protests became and that it allowed others around the world to witness the events of these conflicts as protesters shared videos, blogged and tweeted about their experiences.
On May 2nd, it was announced by US President Obama that Osama Bin Laden had been found and killed by US Navy Seals in Abbottabad, Pakistan. This marked the end of the search for the man who was thought to be responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th of 2001.
March 11 - an underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 hits off the coast of Japan, causing a tsunami that hit with waves over 130 feet high. Damage from the tsunami and earthquake triggered a nuclear disaster at the nuclear power plant due to several meltdowns and the inability to cool the reactors. Tons of contaminated water was released into the Pacific Ocean. It has become the second most dangerous nuclear disaster in history only behind Chernobyl.
January 12 – A stolen snowplow leads Toronto police on a chase, crashing into several cars. Toronto police officer Sergeant Ryan Russell died and the alleged thief ended in hospital with gunshot wounds.
August 14 – A massive shooting occurs outside a casino in Kelowna, British Columbia, killing one and injuring four others, including a Hell's Angels member. Jonathan Bacon, one of the Bacon Brothers and one of the most notorious gangsters in British Columbia suspected to have been with the Red Scorpions, is the only one killed in the shooting.
July 23: age 27, alcohol poisoning. The very talented, but often troubled U.K. pop star was found dead in her London home. Her second album, Back to Black (2006), led to five 2008 Grammy Awards.
March 23: age 79, congestive heart failure. Actress, movie legend; she was one of the most famous actresses (and richest) in the world by 1960 when she starred in "Cleopatra". She was famously married 8 times to 7 husbands. In her later years she devoted much of her time to AIDS research.
Chairman and Co-Founder of Apple, died due to complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 56. Jobs was known for his keynote speeches that were given each year to update the loyal Apple followers, as well as his enlightening interview style.
June 15: The Boston Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks four games to three, ending a 39-year Stanley Cup drought for the Bruins. A riot erupted in the final moments of Game 7. The mob flipped and burned cars, smashed windows, looted stores. At least 140 people were reported as injured during the incident, 1 critically; at least 4 people were stabbed, 9 police officers were injured, and 101 people were arrested that night.
Former "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen entered drug rehab in January, leading CBS to put "Two and a Half Men" on hiatus. In February, Sheen criticized the show's creator. CBS then announced it had canceled the rest of the season. Sheen began a string of media appearances to explain himself, and state he was "winning". The uncertainty over "Two and a Half Men" ended when CBS hired Ashton Kutcher to take Sheen's place as co-star of the show.
