Meteor explodes over Russia

February 15 – A meteor explodes over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, injuring 1,491 people and damaging over 4,300 buildings. It is the most powerful meteor to strike Earth's atmosphere in over a century. The incident, along with a coincidental flyby of a larger asteroid, prompts international concern regarding the vulnerability of the planet to meteor strikes.

Royal Birth: Prince George

Prince William and Princess Kate had their first child, a baby boy, on July 22. They named him George Alexander Louis. There was a media frenzy, waiting to get the first picture of them leaving the hospital. He is third in line of succession to the British throne, after his paternal grandfather, Prince Charles and his father.  

Celebrity Baby: North West

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West had their first child on June 15. They named their daughter North West. They had offers for $2-5 million for the first pictures of their baby but they rejected them all. They posted the first picture of North 2 months after she was born.

Pope resigns; New pope

February 28 – Benedict XVI resigns as pope, becoming the first to do so since Gregory XII in 1415, and the first to do so voluntarily since 1294  (Celestine V). March 13 – Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina is elected the 266th pope, whereupon he takes the name Francis and becomes the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere.

Boston Marathon Bombing

April 15 – Two Chechen Islamist brothers explode two bombs at the Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States, killing 3 and injuring 264 others.

Snowden forced to flee

June 6 – American Edward Snowden discloses operations engaged by a US government mass surveillance program to news publications and flees the country, later being granted temporary asylum in Russia.

First Canadian in charge of the ISS

March 13 - Chris Hadfield became the first Canadian to be the master on board the International Space Station (ISS), to the successor to the American NASA Kevin Ford.

Oscar Pistorius kills girlfriend

South African sprint runner Oscar Pistorius, a double-amputee, competed in the Paralympic and Olympic Games (2012). On Valentine's Day, Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, in his Pretoria home. He claimed he had mistaken her for an intruder hiding in the bathroom. He was arrested and at his trial was found guilty of murder. 

Chris Kyle killed

Feb 2: killed by an ex-Marine with mental illness; shot at a gun range. Chris Kyle was a Navy SEAL marksman whose autobiography ‘American Sniper’ became a bestseller and was made into a major Hollywood film starring Bradley Cooper.

Andy Murray big win

In tennis, Andy Murray finally won the big one, becoming the first male British-born tennis player to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.
