Pulse nightclub mass shooting

On June 12, a gunmen opened fire at Pulse, a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and injuring 53 others in the deadliest mass shooting in US history til that point. Gunman Omar Mateen, 29, who was shot and killed by police, called 911 and pledge his allegiance to ISIS after the attack.

Dakota Access Pipeline victory

The Standing Rock Sioux tribe and other interest groups gained national attention for protesting plans for the Dakota Access Pipeline to travel underneath the Missouri River, the primary source for the tribe's drinking water. After months of tirelessly protesting, the Army Corp of Engineers decided to halt construction of the pipeline.

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds die

On December 27, Carrie Fisher, most famous for her role as Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" movies, died from a heart attack at age 60. The following day, her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, was hospitalized after suffering a stroke, and died shortly after. 

Disney alligator attack

Tragedy struck at Disney World when 2-year-old Lane Graves was killed by an alligator while vacationing with his family on June 14. The little boy was playing in the sand at Grand Floridian Resort when he was snatched by an alligator. At the time there were "no swimming" signs around the water, but no signs warning of alligators.

Louisiana floods

In August, Louisiana was battered with heavy rain and winds for more than a week, causing catastrophic flooding. Thirteen people were killed in the flood, which was the worst US disaster since Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Nice terror attack

On July 14, a 20-ton truck plowed into a crowd watching fireworks near the beach for Bastille Day in Nice, France, tragically killing 86 people. The attacker was inspired by ISIS to carry out the attack and was killed by police at the scene.

First Female Presidential Candidate

Hillary Clinton made history when she defeated Bernie Sanders to win the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first woman in US history to win the nomination of a major political party.

Zika virus

Zika, the mosquito-born virus that can cause severe birth defects in infants of infected mothers, was declared a global public health emergency in February. It became a major obstacle associated with the 2016 Rio Olympics when many athletes and reporters opted out of participating due to concerns over the virus which was prominent in Brazil at the time. 

Presidential Election results

A traumatic election came to a shocking end when Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States. Despite the majority of polls and pundits predicting a Hillary Clinton victory, Trump secured the 220 Electoral College votes needed to claim the presidency, but did lose to Hillary in the popular vote. Anti-Trump protests broke out around the country with #NotMyPresident.

Cubs win World Series

After 108 long years, the Chicago Cubs finally brought home their first World Series win in more than a century. The game against the Cleveland Indians lasted 10 innings and even a rain delay as dedicated fans were on the edge of their seats during the game that ended in a close score of 8-7.

Obama's historic visit to Cuba

On March 21, President Barak Obama because the first US president to visit Cuba after nearly 90 years, marking the end of a trade and travel embargo and 50 years of poor relations. 

Police shooting of Alton Sterling

On July 5, Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man was fatally shot several times at close range while held to the ground by two Baton Rouge Police officers in Louisiana. The shooting was caught on camera by a witness, sparking protests and riots across the country.

Police shooting of Philando Castile

Philando castle was in the car with his girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter when they were pulled over by the police in Minnesota on July 6. When he reached for his ID, he was shot several times and the entire encounter was livestreamed on Facebook by his girlfriend. Following the shooting of Alton Sterling the day before, protests and riots intensified across the country.

Killing of Harambe

May 28: A 3-year-old boy fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo which led to the killing of a 17-year-old gorilla, Harambe. A video of the incident shows the boy being dragged by the gorilla. The incident sparked major controversy, because many people believed the officials could have avoided killing the gorilla.

Rio Summer Olympics

Kevin Durant led the US men' basketball team to gold victory. Simone Manuel became the first African-American woman to win an individual Olympic gold in swmming. Michael Phelps added to his medals with his 23rd gold medal, and a total of 28 medals. American gymnast Simon Biles emerged as an Olympic star winning 4 golds and a bronze.

Ryan Lochte fake robbery

Lying Lochte and friends told authorities they were robbed at gunpoint, but by "robbed at gunpoint" he meant "we busted in the door of a gas station bathroom and handed over cash for the damages." 

Brexit

The UK went to the polls on June 23, for a historic vote to determine whether or not they would leave or remain in the European Union. The referendum determined that the UK would leave the EU with 52% of the voting population in favor. By March 2019 the UK won't be part of the EU. Primer Minister David Cameron resigned the day after losing the referendum with Theresa May taking his place.
