Clifford Olson convicted

Clifford Robert Olson Jr. was a convicted Canadian serial killer who confessed to murdering 11 children and young adults between the ages of nine and 18 years in the early 1980s in BC.

First Canadian to climb Mt Everest

On October 5 at 9:30am local time, Skreslet became the first Canadian to reach the summit of Mount Everest, via the southeast col route. The 1982 Canadian Mount Everest Expedition (sponsored by Air Canada) had taken five years to plan, $3 million to finance and required 27 tons of equipment to outfit the party. The expedition also experienced tragedy when four climbers perished in the Khumbu Icefall during setup of Camp I.

Thriller Album released

Thriller is the sixth studio album by American singer Michael Jackson, released on November 30, 1982. It became the world's best-selling album, won 8 Grammy Awards in 1984, including Album of the Year. It produced 6 singles in 1983 — "The Girl Is Mine", "Billie Jean", "Beat It", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", "Human Nature", "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)"; and "Thriller" was released in January 1984. 

Graceland opens

Less than 5 years after Elvis' death, his home Graceland was opened to the public on June 7th. It is located in Memphis, Tennessee. It serves as a museum. Graceland is the second most-visited house in America with over 650,000 visitors a year, second only to the White House.

Princess Grace dies

September 22: Princess Grace, 52, dies of injuries when car plunges off mountain road; daughter Stephanie, 17, suffers serious injuries. Grace Kelly was an American actress who became Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III in April 1956.
