Facebook Launched

Facebook is launched as a social networking site only open to students from Harvard in February by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. It is expanded first to other colleges in the Boston area and other Ivy League Colleges.

Deadliest Tsunami in History

December 26: An earthquake in the ocean close to Indonesia, measuring 9.3 on the Richter Scale triggering a massive tsunami. At least 290,000 people are confirmed to have died from South Asia to as far as South Africa.

Summer Olympics in Athens

Aug 13-29: Olympics held in Athens, Greece. Swimmer Michael Phelps won six gold medals and set a single-Games record with eight total medals. Ziljaard-van Moorsel became the first female cyclist to earn four career gold medals, reaching a total of six Olympic medals, while canoeist Birgit Fischer became the first athlete in any sport to win two medals in each of five Olympic Games.

Britney Spears gets married twice

In January, Britney Spears got married to childhood friend Jason Alexander in Vegas. It only lasted 55 hours, ending in an annulment. She went for it one more time in September by marrying her backup dancer, Kevin Federline, in September at a backyard wedding and reception that consisted of chicken fingers, ribs and a boombox.

Rising to Hollywood fame after hits like Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, the redheaded teen queen quickly became a media target and battled tons of rumors. She became labelled as a party girl who went clubbing every night. She also made the headlines for hooking up with hunky Colin Farrell shortly after being dumped by Wilmer Valderrama, who plays Fez on That '70s Show.

Janet Wardrobe Malfunction

Janet Jackson's Super Bowl spectacle gave birth to the term, "wardrobe malfunction." While performing Rock Your Body with Justin Timberlake during the half-time show, Justin reached up to rip off the breastplate of Janet's costume, exposing her right boob on national TV! Janet ran off the stage, but later apologized, saying she had problems with her wardrobe.

Youngest Wimbledon winner

On Jul 4th Maria Sharapova defeated the defending champion and the top seed Serena Williams in straight sets to become the third youngest women to win the Wimbledon at just 17 years of age. Though the victory was termed by the media as the most stunning upset in recent memory, Sharapova continued her ascent up the rankings and reached the world's no. 1 in Sept 2005.

Messi debuts

Lionel Messi, who has won the Ballon d'Or five times, is considered as the greatest player of all time. It all started on Oct 16th of this year, when Messi made his debut for Barcelona at just 17 years, 3 months, and 22 days of age. Though he played only 77 minutes in his debut season and did not score any goals that year, his achievements in the following years are well known.

Lord of the Rings huge winner

At the 76th Academy Awards, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King wins picture and director awards as well as nine others for a total of 11 Academy Awards, a tie for the most ever won by a single film. The other films are Titanic and Ben Hur (1959).
