Events

Malaysia Airlines MH370 goes missing

The prospect of a 747 plane filled with passengers disappearing from the sky seemed like a fictitious plotline from a television show until March 8 when a Malaysian Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur destined for Beijing vanished. No crash site, debris or sign of any of the 239 missing people on board have ever been found and the search continues to this day.

Malaysia Airline MH17 shot down

July 17: Malaysian Airlines Flight 17, heading from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down near the Ukrainian border. Though no one has ever been found formally responsible, American intelligence sources blame pro-Russian separatist forces using a surface-to-air missile for the deaths of all 298 people on board.

Sochi Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics were held in February in Sochi, Russia. The Olympic hosts ended up winning both the most medals and the highest number of golds in the Sochi Games. The opening ceremony experienced a major lighting malfunction when only 4 out of the 5 Olympic rings turned on.

North Korean hacked Sony

A North Korean group hacked Sony and released movies, and then private emails between studio executives and famous producers were leaked, wherein the executives insulted some A-list stars .

They also threatened violence if the movie "The Interview" was shown in movie theaters; Sony released the movie through YouTube the day before Christmas.

Moncton Shootings

June 4 - Justin Bourque, a 24-year-old from Moncton shot 5 RCMP officers, killing 3 and severely injuring two. A manhunt was launched and continued overnight, lasting 28 hours until he was found.

South Korea ferry disaster

April 16: a ferry boat carrying 476 people, mostly students from Danwon high School, capsized in the water south of Seoul. The vessel sent distress signals but the coast guard couldn't get to the ship in time. A total of 306 people died.

ISIS beheadings

In horrific and barbaric attacks on the US, three American hostages were beheaded by ISIS in gruesome videos made public by the militant group. Videos were released of the following people being beheaded: US journalist James Foley, journalist Steven Sotloff, US vet Peter Kassig who was working as a humanitarian worker in Syria.

Parliament Hill Shootings

October 22 – In the shootings at Parliament Hill, a gunman shot and killed Canadian Forces soldier, Corporal Nathan Cirillo, at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. He then entered the Parliament buildings where he was killed by security forces. Ottawa's downtown core was put under lockdown during the search for a potential second shooter.

Eric Garner death and protests

On July 17, Eric Garner died in Staten Island after a NYPD office put him in a chokehold. Video footage was released of the altercation showing that Garner's last words were, "I Can't Breathe." Since Garner death, protesters hit the streets through the US. 

Derek Jeter retires

After a 19-year career, Derek Jeter wore his #2 jersey for the last time at Fenway Park on September 28, when the Yankees beat the Red Sox 9-5. The 40-year-old Yankee Captain delivered an impressive ending to his last home game at Yankee Stadium Stadium on September 26, when he got the game-winning hit in his final at-bat.

Robin Williams Dies

August 11: age 63, suicide. Actor and comedian Robin Williams was known for his fast-paced, improvisational performance style and for his performances in films like "Good Will Hunting", "Dead Poets Society", and "Mrs. Doubtfire".

Philip Seymour Hoffman Dies

February 2: age 46, drug overdose. American actor, best known for his distinctive supporting and character roles; was in the Hunger Games series. He dies during production of "Mockingjay Part 2". He still appears in key scenes as rebel leader Plutarch but there was meant to be even more of him.
