Events

Invasion of Iraq

United States plans for an invasion of Iraq due to an imminent threat from weapons of mass destruction. They start with their shock and awe campaign with a massive air strikes on military targets in Baghdad before the invasion of Iraq by Land Forces. Saddam Hussein, former President of Iraq, is captured in Tikrit by the U.S. 4th Infantry Division.

"Terminator" becomes Governor

Oct 7: Arnold Schwarzenegger becomes Governor of California. In taking office, Schwarzenegger, who moved to the United States at age 20 from his native Austria, became the first foreign-born governor of California since the Irish-born John Downey in 1862. 

Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster

The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrates over Texas upon reentry, killing all seven astronauts onboard. During the launch a piece of foam insulation broke off from the external tank and struck the left wing of the orbiter. When Columbia re-entered the atmosphere of Earth, hot atmospheric gases destroy the internal wing structure, which caused the spacecraft to become unstable and break apart.

Beef War

In May an Alberta cow is found to have been infected with BSE; the United States, Japan, and a number of other nations halt all imports of Canadian beef. In December, Canada's Department of Agriculture places a partial ban on imported beef from United States due to a single case of mad cow disease in Washington

Justin Timberlake went solo professionally and personally. He left 'NSYNC to put out a solo album "Justified", and he broke up with girlfriend Britney Spears.

Federer first Grand Slam title

In men's tennis, the greatest player of all time, Roger Federer, won his first grand slam title in Wimbledon defeating Mark Philippoussis in straight sets. It was just the beginning of his now renowned career with 17 grand slam wins.

Surfer girl loses her arm

Bethany Hamilton, a 13 year old professional surfer, while on a regular morning surf, had her left arm completely bitten off by a shark. She lost 60% of her blood and had to undergo an emergency surgery. In an act of sheer courage, Bethany returned to her board just three weeks after the incident. She continues to compete professional until this date even winning the first place in many competitions. The movie "Soul Surfer" is about her life.
